Sanctuaries are a very important part of the animal rights movement. They not only serve as a safe haven for abused and orphaned animals of all types, they also serve as teaching and leaning tools. In fact, aside from general protection and providing a safe home, many offer some sort of educational outreach. The belief is that by seeing other animals in non-threatening environments in which they are allowed to interact with others of their kind (and sometimes other kinds), humans will gain respect for their emotional and intellectual capabilities. After all, truly getting to know and understand some thing is a sure way to respect and change.
